What happened?
At around 4pm on Thursday 13th August 2026, a Southern train travelling from London Victoria to Eastbourne derailed just outside Lewes. Three of the train's eight carriages left the tracks and turned onto their sides between Cooksbridge and Lewes station.
Around 150 passengers were on board. British Transport Police declared a major incident, and more than 20 ambulances, three air ambulances and 10 fire engines attended the scene. Firefighters worked to free passengers trapped inside the carriages, including one coach that became completely inaccessible.
Two people suffered serious injuries. A further 18 people were treated for less serious injuries, including cuts and bruises. British Transport Police confirmed that all passengers had been safely evacuated.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has sent a team of inspectors to the scene. Early reports point to a possible track defect, though the exact cause hasn’t been confirmed.
How we can support you
If you were travelling on the train, or you’re supporting someone who was, our specialists can explain what legal options might be available to you.
Serious injuries from incidents like this often mean ongoing treatment: physiotherapy, psychological support or time off work to recover. A legal case can help fund that support early, so you’re not left covering these costs yourself during your recovery.
Our team is actively available to support those affected by the derailment.

What the RAIB investigation could mean
Working out what went wrong, and stopping it happening again
The RAIB operates independently of the rail industry and government. Its job is to establish the facts behind an incident and recommend changes that improve safety across the network.
For anyone affected by the derailment, the RAIB’s findings can bring clarity: a clear account of why the crash happened and what should change as a result. That evidence can also strengthen a compensation claim, by helping to establish where responsibility lies.
How we can help you
- Explain whether you have grounds to make a claim
- Gather evidence, including RAIB findings once they’re published
- Manage contact with Southern Rail and its insurers on your behalf
- Secure early compensation for treatment and other costs, where possible
- Support you from your first enquiry through to final settlement
